Letting the Light In: Carole and Mark’s Luminous Kitchen Makeover

Carole and Mark’s kitchen - BEFORE

A Bright, Neutral Transformation

As their children neared the end of their studies, Carole and Mark felt it was the perfect time to revamp their ground floor. Amidst lockdown, they reached out to Saffron Interiors, initiating their project via video call.
Their existing kitchen, adorned with oak doors and elaborate trims, surprisingly felt dark despite light worktops. Dominated by a large dining table, the room yearned for change. The couple’s vision was clear: reconfigure the garage and study into a new utility room and expand the dining area by merging it with the existing utility space.
This structural transformation also allowed for the replacement of French doors with larger sliding doors, inviting an abundance of natural light.

Making the Most of a Good Thing

Bryan, Saffron’s head designer, seized the opportunity to amplify the influx of natural light. He skillfully guided Carole and Mark through material selections that would enhance the sense of spaciousness and tranquility.
Opting for the Belsay 90mm framed shaker door in ‘Cashmere’, its earthy tone harmonized with the tumbled stone flooring. Additionally, the ‘Burbridge’ brass handles injected warmth. Paired with the chosen ‘Atacalma’ Mistral worktops, known for their subtle contrast and inconspicuous joins, were ideal as they spanned nearly 6 meters, including a peninsula.

The Layout

The spacious kitchen/dining area, now opening to the garden with large sliding doors, strategically places the dining table near these doors. This layout facilitates a seamless indoor-outdoor experience, especially enjoyable during summer.

The peninsula serves as a casual divide between the kitchen and dining areas, offering a spot for guests to mingle. And the kitchen is thoughtfully zoned for preparation, cooking, cleaning, and storage. On the dining side of the peninsula, reduced depth base units and glass wall units provide convenient storage for dining essentials.
To complete the space, the designers created a matching functional utility room, incorporating abundant storage. (One can never have too much storage.. can you?)
