A Cheery Change for a Much-Loved Cottage
ladan is seeking a fresh take for her Woking cottage, approached Saffron Interiors for a kitchen redesign.
Her beautiful period property required a revamp, but Ladan wished to avoid the typical traditional kitchen style.
the pre-existing kitchen, a relic of the late eighties, featured overly ornate limed oak cabinetry with fussy details, unsuitable for a small space.
Her goal was a modern, fun, yet uncluttered kitchen that felt open and functional.
stripping back to basics
The initial survey revealed potential for better space utilization with some adjustments. The plan involved stripping everything back: relocating a radiator, removing service boxing, and rerouting pipes and wiring. This allowed for a smarter layout, placing refrigeration, larder storage, and ovens away from the working area.
Ladan desired an open, wall-unit-free working space, focusing base cabinetry on storage for kitchen essentials. Innovative solutions like ‘Le Mans’ pull-out shelves and generous drawers ensured efficient organization. A Quooker tapeliminated the need for a kettle, preserving the minimalist aesthetic.

Ladan was drawn to deep indigo doors but concerned about the space feeling dark. To counterbalance, we proposed light work surfaces and flooring.
Glacier Mistral resin worktops in crisp white complemented the calacatta marble floor tiles, enhancing the minimalistic feel. Ladan’s choice of a white glass induction hob and matching extractor kept the walls light, avoiding the starkness of traditional black or stainless steel.
For the tall unit section, we chose a neutral woodgrain to anchor the design, mirrored in small shelves on the opposite wall. Her selection of playful pastel pendant lights, accessories, and a brass wire frame shelf added the desired touch of fun and personality.
